Trip report: Wetpixel Whale Sharks 2017

Day 2 of Wetpixel’s second group followed the familiar ritual of an early start and then heading north for a hour to find the whale sharks.

We were lucky to find large numbers of them quickly. We were in the water quickly and despite the restriction on the numbers of photographers in the water, there was plenty of action.

Stefano Nicolini has joined us from Italy and is shooting a Nikonos V. It seems so long since we all loaded film and discussed the relative merits of film speeds! It will be exciting to see them when they have been processed.

We were out with the sharks for over 6 hours, so it was important to get out to rest and rehydrate periodically!

Even Pascquale, our boat crew member and guide, joined us in the water!

I have been playing with creating bubble in the images by pulling the housing down from the surface while shooting:

We have also been playing with diving down under the sharks. There in nothing better than hanging around under whale sharks!

There were a large number of sharks around all day.

After a very full day, everyone was pretty tired.

The forecast is predicting the arrival of tropical storm Franklin tomorrow, so it is unlikely that we will be able to get out. We may head for cenotes instead…
