Nikon UK hosts an annual series of events for members of the Nikon Pro Services, and Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon attended one in Manchester. This allowed him to get hands-on with the Nikon Z9 and, in this case, the new Z 105mm micro lens. He provides some thoughts about the new flagship Nikon mirrorless camera and what advantages it may offer for underwater image-makers.
For obvious reasons, gatherings of underwater image makers have been rare over the past few years. The first post-pandemic dive show in the UK was the Go Diving Show, which was held at the Stoneleigh Showgrounds, in the UK’s Midlands from 4 to 6 March. Wetpixel was there to catch up with everyone.
The Red Sea Diving Festival, in the resort of Eilat, is being held from 11 to 14 March. The event focuses on underwater imaging and has an underwater image gallery along with a photographic shootout. Wetpixel is on hand to report on all the goings-on. Please keep checking back for updates from Eilat!
Wetpixel Editor, Adam Hanlon, is at the annual Atlantis ImageMakers event. This is an annual tip run by the owners of Atlantis Dive Resorts and Liveaboard and their imaging ambassador, Marty Snyderman. It aims to showcase the photographic and video opportunities that exist at Atlantis’s two properties in the Philippines, namely Atlantis Dumaguete and Puerto Galera. Wetpixel’s Drew Wong presents a comprehensive report from the 2019 ADEX Show. Held in the Suntec Center, Singapore, the show is the longest-running and biggest dive show in Asia and had numerous panel discussion and events centered around underwater imaging. In addition, the now infamous Wetpixel/Sam’s Tours Imaging party was held at the Armoury, and Drew has shared his images from the event. If you weren’t there, you missed out!
The Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 contests’ results will be announced live on stage at the Go Diving Show in Coventry, UK Sunday on 24 February at 3.30pm. All 48 of the finalists’ images are also on show at the event.
Don Silcock presents a photographic essay and review of diving with American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) at Mexico’s Chinchorro Banks. He describes in some depth how the crocodiles are often static until a photographer approaches too close when they can explode into dynamic action. The wranglers keep a close eye on the animals and use large wooden sticks to act as physical barriers if required.
Wetpixel is reporting “live” from the sixth Anilao Underwater Shootout. The event attracts large numbers of undewater photographers froround the globe and is hosted by the Philippines Deapartment of Tourism. The 2018 Wetpixel Whale Sharks trip is underway! Every year hundreds of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) gather North of the island of Isla Mujeres, close to Cancun, Mexico. The aggregation provides one of the most amazing natural spectacles in the underwater world. We will be posting daily reports, so please check back often
