Through years of protecting great white sharks off the coast of California in addition to tagging and tracking programs, scientists have zeroed in on several great white shark nurseries off California. For years and years the sharks were a rare sight off the coast, then, in 2015 regular ocean visitors started seeing them frequently. Marine Dynamics has reported on its blog that three great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) have been found dead over the past few days in the area around renown cage shark diving venue Gansbaai in South Africa’s Western Cape province.
Several days ago a video showing a great white shark breaching and then falling into a shark cage with a diver in it went viral. The response has sparked a lot of opinions and the conversation is well beyond the diving community as even the New York Times covered the story. The Solmar V, the operation with which the incident occurred, released a statement yesterday.
A new survey has found that the population numbers of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) off South Africa is about half what had been expected. A paper in Marine Ecology Progress Series shows the results of a six year study into the numbers of the apex predators and shows that there are only between 353 and 522 of the sharks.
