Scientific American has published an article about the impact of ecotourism with whale sharks. It evaluates whether the burgeoning trade in whale shark watching in Mexico, Thailand, South Africa, Mozambique, Honduras, the Maldives, Ningaloo Reef in Australia and other areas is of benefit to the animals themselves. Whilst there is no doubt that in areas where fishing or finning whale sharks was a primary source of income, offering tourism provides an alternative there may also be a negative impact on the sharks due to pressures of numbers of people wanting to see the animals
