Federal government denies protection to great white sharks

The U.S. Federal National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has declined to protect great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) off the coast of California under the Endangered Species Act. This was despite there being significant scientific evidence that the Californian populations consists of less than 350 animals. The biggest threat to these sharks is the set gillnet fishery targeting California halibut and white seabass, which is responsible for the vast majority of the documented bycatch of juvenile white sharks. It is hoped that the Californian state legislature, which actually controls this fishery, may take the actions that the federal body has failed to do. (Image from Shutterstock)
