The LA Times reports that divers will be carrying out a cull of purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, California. The sea urchins need controlling as they are destroying the kelp beds in the area. The goal is to remove some 4.8 million over the next five years and to reduce their population density from as many as 70 per square meter to two. (Image by Kirt L.
