DiveNewswire launches Diverwire.com
Our friend Scott Jones at DiveNewswire has announced the launch of DiverWire.com, a news site for divers. Releases that appear on DiveNewswire that are “consumer-friendly” can now be posted and distributed to the world through Diverwire. This distribution will be through RSS syndication to major dive sites, news outlets, dive retailers and others wanting fresh news for their sites (including Wetpixel, when we get up and running). In a sense, Diverwire aims to become “Associated Press” for the dive industry.
Adobe Lightroom beta4 vs. CaptureOne 3.7 Raw Conversions
Quite a few people I know have been extolling the virtues of Adobe’s new Photoshop Lightroom beta (as of the writing of this article, Adobe is on their fourth public beta release). Always on the lookout for new photo organization, workflow, and raw conversion software, I decided to give Lightroom a try.
Note that this article uses 2.1 megabytes of images, so don’t continue reading if you’re on a really slow connection.
Hawaii underwater survey reveals new species
A team of researchers discovered dozens of new species of invertebrates during a cruise to the recently created Northwestern Hawaiian Islands National Monument.
Among the internationally recognized specialists was Wetpixel moderator and Los Angeles Natural History Museum taxonomist Leslie Harris; one of her photos was featured at the National Geographic website. You can also watch a TV interview about the expedition with some underwater footage of the NWHI.
Ernie Brooks and Wyland interviewed by Jason Heller at DEMA
During DEMA, Jason Heller of DivePhotoGuide.com had the opportunity to interview ocean legends Ernie Brooks and Wyland about the upcoming Wetpixel and DivePhotoGuide.com Underwater Competition, their current projects, and the origins of their visions.
On the digital revolution, Ernie says “embrace it - it’s incredible, it’s fabulous…I miss my darkroom, but I think it’s nice to spend a lot more time out in the light…[and] it’s non-polluting!”

December 31st, 2006 is the last day for submitting entries to the 2007 Beneath the Sea Worldwide Underwater Photo/Video Competition.
The winners of the Beneath the Sea 2007 Worldwide Photo/Video Competition are announced at the Film Festival the weekend of Beneath the Sea’s Dive and Travel Exposition, March 23rd, 24th and 25th, 2006, at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey.
In addition to the awards that the Grand Prize winners of each category will receive, there will be prizes for all First, Second and Third place winners. Continue reading for more details…
New DiveFilm Podcast Videos - Episodes 33 and 34
Presented in partnership with Wetpixel, DiveFilm Podcast Video Episode 34, “Guardian of the Wrecks” by Nick Martorano, is a tribute to Palau’s wrecks and their marine life. The video is a contrast of the past and the present; while many of the wrecks still hold shoes, machinery, and bottles from their previous inhabitants, fish, corals, and crustaceans are slowly claiming their ground.
Also available is Episode 33, “Sea Inside, Pacific Northwest,” which offers a glimpse of the public access TV series produced by John Williams of Still Hope Productions. This series is available via cable and public access stations, and features the work of a number of underwater imagers who have all contributed their images to this project in an effort to raise awareness about the ecosystem and marine life of the cold waters along the northwest coast of the U.S.

A couple of great new discussions have been started recently in the Galley section of the Wetpixel Forums. Paul Kay, the initator of many of wetpixel’s most interest debates, has started a discussion on “Thinking Differently” - debating the importance of innovation and also asking how many more new ideas have we left to explore. The other discussion “TTL In 2007” revisits the issue of TTL strobe control in digital photography. Two and a half year’s on from one of Wetpixel’s most popular ever threads “TTL Anonymous” has the march of technology now made it time for a widespread adoption of TTL in digital underwater photography.
